"All we have to do is learn to be a little kinder and we will solve the problems of the universe." -Aldous Huxley
People are mean these days. I just can't wrap my head around it. Smiles are ignored by passerbys on the street, pedestrians don't bother with courtesy waves, doors aren't held open for another person scurrying quickly from behind, mergers on the freeway are overlooked and ignored. This world is a mess. Isn't it easier to be nice than it is to be mean? Wouldn't you rather know that you made someones day, instead of breaking it?
One time, I was driving from Monterey to Sacramento with my boyfriend. After about an hour, we exited and pulled over on the shoulder so I could drive the rest of the way and he could take a nap. He put the hazards on, and we did our little Chinese Fire Drill. While I was buckling up, a truck pulled over a little ways behind me and I motioned out my window for him to pass us and keep going. He didn't pass, and stayed where he was. I realized that he had pulled over to see if we needed any help! I put a thumbs up out my window, and he proceeded to exit on his way. I was truly touched. I wanted to jump out of my car and give him a hug, and had I not been on the freeway, I probably would have. We need more people like you, Mister Truck Guy!
EDIT:
Today I was driving to class. I was in Marina, on Carmel trying to cross over Del Monte and a very impatient car was behind me. They kept honking at me, and tried to zoom around me when I finally got across Del Monte (yes, they tried to PASS me while I was crossing 4 lanes) and proceeded to honk violently and flip me off when they finally got in front of me. What on earth is so important that you have to be a complete jackass?! Did you have a screw driver in your head and you needed to get the the hospital? Was the mob after you? Zombies? The super fast kind, like in that Will Smith movie?

I soooo know how you feel, with everything you said. I have a similar "angry driver" story. Last night I was at a stop light on Fremont. And the light turned green while I was looking down for a SPLIT SECOND, but I start going as the person behind me lays on their horn! yeah, not just a quick courtesy honk, but a full on blaring horn. So annoying. Seriously, fuck people. Everyone's just so selfish these days. I can't stand it.
I hate when this happens, sigh. I miss riding the bus.
